Universe HHJ20W: Nouveau City, Oct 11, 2023 - In a move heralded by some as innovative and by others as borderline absurd, Nouveau City's Municipal Department of Public Works has unveiled a brand new pedestrian infrastructure solution: Bubble Wrap Sidewalks™.

The decision came after an exhaustive study showed that over 12,000 phones were dropped on the city sidewalks every week, leading to approximately $3.4 million in repair costs to its citizens monthly.

"We're simply keeping up with the times," explained Deputy Director of Public Works, Felix Horowitz. "If our populace insists on texting while walking, we must ensure their devices suffer minimal damage."

The bubble wrap, sourced from ReBubblize Inc., isn't the standard fare one would find in a shipping box. It's been tested and fortified to be weatherproof, providing not only phone protection but a slight spring to one's step.

Pedestrians seemed initially baffled but quickly found fun in the pop beneath their feet. Some children, and admittedly a few adults, were seen intentionally jumping up and down to produce the satisfying pop.

Not everyone, however, is thrilled with the innovation. Local shoemaker, Griselda Hayworth lamented, "Stiletto sales have plummeted. Nobody wants to buy heels if they're just going to puncture the sidewalks!"

There's also been a noted increase in the number of people deliberately dropping their phones for the thrill, knowing the bubble wrap will mostly protect their devices.

The city is considering if Bubble Wrap Roads™ might be the next step. But for now, if you're in Nouveau City, enjoy the bounce in your walk and the safety under your phone.
